Summary: AU/future!fic. Cassidy has plans, but Mac is babysitting. Or maybe he is.
He had planned it all out during his meeting at work: some candles, a nice dinner, and then a question. Simple as that. He bought the ring a few weeks before, but had been unable to decide what to do. He knew that Mac would figure it out the second he even walked into the door, so he was ready to just do it right after he opened it. Instead he was met with a half-naked kid running around his apartment and the loud wailing of another one.
"Mac?" He walked into the apartment and placed his keys on the coffee table as he walked toward their room. "Mac?"
Maybe he was in the wrong apartment. It looked like his apartment, but he imagined that anything was possible. Or maybe he was having a dream about what their life would be like if he asked her.
"Mac?" He entered the bedroom and looked around before walking back out into the living room. "Mac?"
He walked to the kitchen and was, once again, met with a half-naked kid. "Who are you?" The kid looked up at him from his spot on the floor and threw a handful of Cheerios his way. Pleasant. "Mac! Some kid is throwing food at me!"
"Cassidy?"
"I'm in the kitchen." He turned around toward the doorway and waited for her to make an appearance. When she made it to the kitchen, she was covered in water and was holding a small baby in her arms.
"You're home!" She nodded and looked at him nervously before turning back around and walking away.
"Who are these kids?" He watched as she placed the now sleeping baby into a baby carrier and started wiping her face off with a towel.
"They're Parker's. She and Peter had a date tonight, since they haven't gone anywhere since the youngest one was born and I couldn't say 'no'."
"Why couldn't she get an actual babysitter?"
"Well, she was going to get the girl that they usually use, Clara or something, but she had a class so she called me." She started walking away before he could respond and suddenly he was staring at the baby as it started to move around in the carrier.
"Umm... Mac! The little one is moving!"
"Edward, you stay here with Cassidy and Elizabeth. I'll be back in about fifteen minutes." She picked up her purse and shrugged at Cassidy's face of unbelief and then walked to the door. She looked back and then shrugged again before opening it and walking out of the apartment.
"Mr. 'sidy!" Cassidy looked away from the door in time to see the boy ripping his shirt off. Seriously, was this kid secretly Dick's?
"Yes?"
"Food!" The boy threw his shirt onto the floor and started stomping on it until Cassidy stood up from the couch and started walking toward the kitchen. Edward ran and caught up with him, punched Cassidy in the leg, and then ran around him and into the kitchen.
Cassidy opened the refrigerator door and, just as he lifted the orange juice jug out of it, Edward jutted his hand towards it and knocked it to the ground.
It had been five minutes since Mac walked out of the apartment and he had orange juice all over his shoes and jeans. He was never letting Mac out of his sight again.
"Edward, what does you mom usually do to make Elizabeth stop crying?" Cassidy looked up from the baby and saw the boy shrug his shoulders before pointing to his chest and then to the baby's mouth. "I don't have... I can't..." He sat the baby back into her baby carrier and rushed across the room and grabbed the phone.
He dialed a familiar number and only calmed down once a familiar, yet very groggy voice, answered the phone.
"Hello?"
"I don't have boobs." It was the first thing to come to his mind and he didn't care that Edward was staring at him from his spot on the floor in front of the television and looking like he was about to cry from the lack of attention.
"I wouldn't call you 'little bro' if you did, little bro. So, what is this about your lack of boobs?"
"Somehow Mac was talked into babysitting for Parker and her husband and there's a baby and it's hungry and I don't know how to feed it!" He had never been so nervous in his entire life and, of all people, he called Dick!
"What do I have to do with that?" He could hear Dick moving around in his bed and heard him groan as he stood up. "Remind me not to bang the chick from my African class that I told you about ever again. "
"Dick! I don't want to know!"
"Then why did you call me? I like to brag."
"I'm having a mid-life crisis and I'm not even close to my forties! I'm not ready for kids, Dick! I'm. Not. Ready."
"They're not yours, dude. Calm down. Where's Mackie? She's got boobs."
"She went to the store for more baby formula.... Oh."
Cassidy ran into the bedroom just in time to see Edward jumping on the bed with something in his hand.
"What are you doing?" He watched in horror as the boy lifted his hand and threw the item at him. "That was not nice." He bent down to pick the item up before looking back at the kid and shaking his head. He walked to the bed and was just about to try to lift the boy off of it when the phone rang.
He lifted the phone from the bedside table and didn't even bother looking to see who it was calling at midnight. "Hello?"
"Cassidy, I'm so sorry!"
"The kid just threw a condom at me."
"You gave him a condom?" He flinched as her voice rose a few decibels and shook his head.
"I don't know where he got it from. I had the box in the drawer next to the bed and...." He looked over to the bed side table and noticed the the top drawer was laying on the floor and the box was wedged between the bed and the table. "He opened the drawer."
"I'll be back in a little bit. There's a lot of traffic. I had to go to three different stores before I found the kind of formula Parker uses and there was a wreck or something."
"Okay. But, when you get back, you're calling Parker and demanding she come get this one. He's crazy."
She laughed before answering him. "Oh, really? He was a perfect angel for me."
"I don't think he knows how to keep his clothes on. Are you sure Parker didn't have an affair with Dick after marrying Peter or something?"
She laughed again and he could feel himself relax as he sat down on the bed.
"No, I'm sure. Parker said that his doctor said that it was natural for some kids to do it."
"Well, if our kids ever do that, I'm putting the blame on your side of the family."
"I thought you just said that it was very Dick behavior."
"I did, but my kids will know how to keep their clothes on. And not scream in people's ears when they're on the phone."
He heard the door open from his spot on the couch and lifted his head slightly to glare at her as she leaned over him and placed a kiss on his cheek.
"I'm home." She whispered in his ear before placing another kiss on his cheek and picking up the baby carrier.
He sat up and watched as she took the baby and walked to the kitchen. He didn't notice that he was smiling until there was a knock on the door and he frowned.
He walked to the door and sighed before pulling it open.
"Cassidy! Hi!" Parker walked into the apartment and looked around before looking back at him apologetically and shrugging. "I hope Edward wasn't too much of a problem."
"No, he was fine."
"Great! Where is he?"
Cassidy looked around the room and panicked a little inside before remembering that he left the boy in the bedroom.
"He's in the bedroom. I'll go get him."
"No, no. It's fine. I'll go do it."
He pointed toward the room before walking to the kitchen.
"Parker's here. You didn't even have to call." He yawned before wrapping his arms around her waist and placing his chin on her shoulder.
"Oh! I'll go take Elizabeth to her." He unwrapped his arms from her waist and stood back before following her back into the living room.
"I think Edward took a drawer out of your bedside table. I put it back."
"Thanks, Parker. Here's the little one. She was an angel." Parker smiled brightly and leaned over, hugging Mac, before taking the baby carrier away from her and taking Edward's hand with her free one.
"Thanks so much! I swear, when you two have babies, Peter and I will watch them as much as possible."
Mac nodded and smiled before walking the small distance to the door. She didn't notice Parker letting go of her son's hand before handing Cassidy a small velvet box. Parker shrugged and pointed at the boy before grabbing his hand again and pulling him towards the door behind Mac.
"Maybe we can go out this weekend."
Mac nodded before opening the door and stepping out into the hallway with the taller girl.
"We should."
"Well, thanks again! I swear next time we'll get our schedule's and the baby sitter's schedule's together."
"It wasn't a problem. I think Cassidy even had a little fun."
Parker laughed before shaking her head and walking toward the elevator.
"Somehow I think his fun has just started."
Before Mac could ask what she meant, the elevator doors had opened and Parker was entering it with her two children.
When she walked into the apartment, Cassidy's arms wrapped around her waist and then he clicked the locks into place before dragging her towards the bedroom.
"Is there something I need to know?" Mac stopped in the doorway of the bedroom before looking at him expectantly.
"What?"
"Parker just said something about your fun just starting..." She lifted a brow before walking the rest of the way into the room and sitting on the edge of the bed to take her shoes off.
"Just that we're having our own date tomorrow so don't make any plans."
"A date? We haven't had one of those since you started your business."
"I know, but I think it's about time." He watched as she put on her night clothes and walked to the bathroom. He waited until he heard the soft sound of water running in the sink before lifting the box out of his pocket and placing it into the top drawer next to the left side of the bed.
He took off his shirt and slipped out of his shoes and jeans before padding into the bathroom and brushing his teeth. She smiled at him before walking into the bedroom and slipping into the bed.
She grinned at him as he walked back into the bedroom and turned off all of the lights before crawling into bed himself and wrapping his arms around her once again. He kissed her neck before groaning as she lightly grinded into him.
"I know it's late, but..."
"I can work with late just as well as early, Mac."
"So can I."
He rolled over and opened the top drawer and reached around for the box he always kept in it. When he couldn't find it he remembered seeing it wedged in between it and the bed just a few hours before and reached for it. He looked into the box and groaned before rolling back and looking at her with frown.
Tomorrow would work just as well.
